After being picked up at the airport and transferred to our hotel we had a chance to sort ourselves out and have breakfast. We then did our cultural bit with a visit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Unfortunately it rained continuously but nevertheless we were able to take in the enormous size of the square and its military guards standing rigid and unblinking, for hours on end. We marvelled at the vast expanse of the various pagodas in the Forbidden City. Being a Sunday it was very busy everywhere and the whole place was a sea of 100’s and 100’s of multi-coloured umbrellas. We eventually retired to the hotel for an evening meal and a well-earned rest.
